Code: SCB/22/0650 Impact of parental/sibling imprisonment on children, young people and their families

About the workshop:

Children with a family member in prison are three times more likely to experience poor mental health than their peers. The shame and stigma around family member imprisonment means that these children are often hidden in our communities and can go unsupported. This training is for children services staff, including school staff, Foster Carers, Social Workers, Family Support Workers, Youth Justice Workers, Health Visitors and Early Years staff. Relevant colleagues from voluntary sector organisations are also welcome. We would encourage staff to attend this training even if they are not currently supporting children and families impacted by family member imprisonment as our experience tells us that trained professionals are more effective at identifying and approaching families to offer support following this training.

In this workshop you will meet prisoner family practitioners, step into the shoes of the child impacted by family member imprisonment and hear the voice of a parent coping with supporting her children through their father’s imprisonment. You will leave this workshop with increased practitioner confidence and an online resource pack to support your direct work with Wandsworth children and families impacted by family member imprisonment. This workshop is delivered by co-founders of Corona Kids, Ingrid Belnavis and Yvonne Dawes. Ingrid and Yvonne are registered and qualified social workers with backgrounds in children and families and the criminal justice system. They are prisoner family practitioners who have delivered projects in the community and at HMP Wandsworth/HMP Bronzefield and have worked directly with children and their families for over 10 years.
