Free Suicide Awareness and Response Training for Voluntary and Community Sector staff and volunteers in Wandsworth
The aim is to train hundreds of staff and volunteers in the borough to raise awareness of emotional distress, suicidal thoughts and how to respond in a compassionate manner.

Everyone can potentially help someone in distress or with suicidal thoughts. Compassionate help from a colleague, friend, health provider, care giver, or even a complete stranger can make a real difference to someone who is in distress and considering suicide.

Kirstie Sheehy is a Criminologist and a Mental Health Trainer of International and Nationally accredited courses. Kirstie has been delivering and writing training packages for 25 years and is a qualified City and Guilds Teacher for Adult Learners.
Kirstie has developed and managed a large number of award winning and highly acclaimed projects involving offenders, homeless individuals, those with substance misuse issues and mental health problems in both the voluntary and statutory sector for over 30 years.

Aim: To provide an understanding of the factors that might precipitate suicide and intervention strategies using the ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) model

Training will challenge common myths and enable candidates to develop an understanding of links between suicide, depression and other mental illnesses/disorders. The training will cover the terminology of suicide and provide information on the warning signs and practical strategies on how to support the person who may feel suicidal. The course encourages candidates to respect the decision-making rights of individuals and to understand the importance of supporting the person to talk about suicide. The course also covers how to meet the immediate needs of the person as well as undertaking longer term planning and risk management tasks.
