This course aims to give AMHPs increased knowledge and understanding of the key issues and complexities in relation to the presentation of substance use in mental health.

Learning outcomes
By the end of this course participants will be able to: 

• Identify both legal and illicit substances commonly used by individuals and their effects
• Describe the essential differences between CNS Depressants, Stimulants and Hallucinogenic substances
• Describe the impact of substance misuse on individuals who are suffering from mental illness
• Identify risks associated with substance use on mental health
• Describe the impact of substance abuse on individuals and families
• Identify the key principles of mental health assessment in the MHA
• Outline key national guidance and best practice in this area
• Describe best practice principles in assessment with people experiencing concurrent mental health and substance misuse issues
• Identify challenges and opportunities for joint working and risk management with wider team
