Event description

This is an advanced one day course in Mental Capacity Act (MCA) and it will run virtually over 2-half days. This course is not suitable for participants who do not have any prior knowledge of MCA. It covers common practice challenges and incorporates up to date case law.

This course is for Department of Adult Social Care and Public Health (DASCPH), local authority staff only.

Training objectives
To confidently deliver Mental Capacity Assessments.
Learning outcomes
1. Describe the main principles of the act and who is affected by these provisions
2. Identify when it is appropriate to undertake assessment of capacity
3. Describes ways of completing a mental capacity assessment that encourages inclusive practice
4. Describe key roles in the assessment process, including advocacy
5. Describe how to ensure that you are working in the persons best interests
6. Identify how to report and record in a way that best evidences decisions
7. State the purpose, thresholds and limits of the DOL’s, and proposed changes
8. Describe how relevant agencies play a role in the DOLS safeguards
9. Define the role of the supervisory body, managing authority and inspectorate
10. State how key issues; risk, consent, rights and capacity influence working practices and reporting procedures
