Event description
This course is designed to introduce communication and person-centred planning tools for those working with individuals with a learning disability. The course explores creative approaches to communication and promotes the positive impact of inclusion on individual lives /outcomes.

This course is for Department of Adult Social Care and Public Health (DASCPH), local authority staff only.
Training objectives

  1. To improve positive outcomes through inclusive practices

  2. To introduce a range of tools to improve communication / person centred planning 

Learning outcomes
By the end of this course participants will:



  • Explain how legislation and local policy supports person centred practice in own organisation

  • Explain the benefits of person-centred practice on the individual

  • Describe ways to involve people with learning disabilities who don’t use verbal language to communicate their needs

  • Identify a range of person-centred communication tools that are available for person centred practice

  • Describe creative approaches to communication

  • Identify tools to gather information about a person with a learning disability’s strengths, needs, preferences, hopes, dreams and desires for their person centred plan

  • Describe how to carry out person-centred assessment in a way that promotes social, emotional, cultural, spiritual, intellectual and physical wellbeing

  • Explain how positive risk-taking supports person centred planning
